National Probate Calendar for England and Wales now on Ancestry

The National Probate Calendar for England and Wales covering 1861 to 1941 has recently been made available on Ancestry. This is the first time that this important index has been accessible online.

The index contains over 6 million names and means that you may find details of where and when an ancestor died and the value of the estate they left. Wills can then be ordered from the Principal Probate Registry. However, you do need to be aware that there are some gaps in the coverage.

Ancestry library edition can be accessed within the State Library building from the Family History E-Resources page and also at some public libraries.
