New databases launched for National Family History Week!

As of today, two exciting new databases have been launched at the State Library just in time for National Family History Week.

17th & 18th Century Burney Collection

This collection has nearly 1 million pages of digitised rare 17th and 18th century material published in Britain and the colonies including pamphlets, broadsides and newspapers.

19th Century British Library Newspapers

This database consists of over 2 million pages of digitised 19th century newspaper titles held in the British Library. Newspapers are from all over Britain including Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as England.

British Newspapers 1600 – 1900

Select this option to search across the two collections at once.

Because there are so many regional newspapers in the database, you have a very good chance of finding references to your ancestors. Even if you can’t find them mentioned, try searching for the name of their town or village and limiting your search to their lifetime to discover local and national events which may have affected them. These collections will also be of enormous interest to historians. For instance, searching for the keywords “Swan River” results in over 5,000 hits.

You can access the new databases from any public computer within the State Library and they are very simple to use. Next time you’re in the State Library, why not pick up one of our promotional bookmarks and have a go.

Small Engine Workshop Manuals

320162pd.jpgThe State Library now has access to the Small Engine Repair Reference Centre from EBSCO, an online tool for small engine repair assistance containing manuals for All Terrain Vehicles, commercial mowers, farm tractors, generators, motorcycles, marine engines (inboard and outboard models), outdoor power equipment (chainsaws etc), person water craft (jet skis) and if we ever find a need in the future snow-blowers and snowmobiles.

It is an American product but it does have a number of the worldwide brands and models available in Australia, and is especially good for motorcycles and tractors. It contains PDF scanned images from workshop manuals which allow sections to be emailed or printed. The State Library’s licence means it is only available on computers (Electronic Resources page) in the the library.

World Book Online

World Book LogoAs part of the Electronic Resources Australia (ERA) project, the State Library of Western Australia has  subscribed to the World Book Online. This resource is only available within the library. The World Book Online is an electronic version of the popular print World Book LogoWorld Book Logoencyclopeadia. It provides users everything the print does, with the advantage of up to the minute information on topics and links to pictures, maps and other related resources.

World Book Online is three resources in one, with access to a kids version, a standard version and advanced version. Each is written in a style and language to suit the level and need of user. Other features of World Book Online include Today in History, Explore Australia and Educators’ tools. World Book’s Educators’ Tools page provides a range of resources including correlations from World Book content to WA’s curriculum correlations, links to lesson plans and professional education links.

The State Library is always interested in client feedback for any of our electronic resources. You can leave a comment on this post or one of the feedback forms at each of the reference desks.
